This collection contains records created or received by Director Jay Gates (1993-1998) or maintained by the Director's Office staff on behalf of the Director. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence files, either a straight chronological series documenting all correspondnece going out under the director's signature, or an alphabetical series by correspondent that includes incoming and outgoing correspondence. The chronological correspondence series also includes the correspondence that went out under the interim directors preceeding and following Gates: Clay Johnson (1992-1993) and Charles Venable (1998-1999). The Gates records also include a series of reference or subject files which may contain incoming and outgoing correspondence filed by subject, internal memoranda, or reference materials.
