Awards to Artists [2 of 2], 1986
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the records of the Awards to Artists program from its establishment in 1980 to 2010. The program has three awards named for who endowed the funds: DeGolyler, Kimbrough and Dozier. Records include program administration for each annual awards cycle with recipients and related events; a proposed 15th anniversary exhibition, and non-recipient artist files.
The collection is arranged in four series.
Series 1: Awards to Artists Program Administration contains materials relating to the preparation for the Awards to Artists each year including financial information, correspondence, and jury documnentation. The Administrative Records also include the recipient files from each year. Recipient files generally include the application form, resume / cirriculum vitae, artist statement, letters of recommendation, residency information, proposed project description and budget, correspondence, and images of recent work.
Series 2: 15th Anniversary Exhibition series includes preparatory and administrative documents regarding the planning and funding of an Awards to Artists Exhibition, and correspondence and updated artist files for recipients from 1981-1991. Ultimately the DMA did not put on the 15 Years of Awards to Artists Exhibition.
Series 3: Media contains photography of award recipients and events and audio and video recordings of public presentation events.
Series 4: Non-Recipient Artist Files include artist applications, curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, residency information, correspondence and some images (generally slides were returned to non-recipients). All application materials for an artist have been combined into a single alphabetical series, combining application materials from multiple years together.
NOTE: During description, a number of artist names in the non-recipient artist files were found to be spelled incorrectly, some becoming a different name. These were corrected as found, though if the writing was legible and did not result in a strange name the name on the folder was not compared with the submitted documents within. The extent of the issue was not realized until the majority of the series' boxes had been entered. If the name you search for is not found, it may behoove the researcher to browse the box list and review any closely-spelled names. Please notify staff if you find any corrections needed.
