Correspondence, 1940 - 1949
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of records related to the Hoblitzelle collections of old master paintings and English silver on long-term loan and then donated to the DMA. The collection also contains collected research on the collection and its contextual history. Each topic is represented by a series.
The Old Master series dates from 1937-1874, with some related reference material dating from 1873 and 1899. The series includes correspondence, appraisals, object files and related publications. Correspondants include Karl Hoblitzelle, museum directors, and Charles Muskovtich, the conservator hired to work on the collection.
The Silver series dates primarily from the 1980s and includes loan information, appraisals and announcement of the donation.
The Related Reseearch series contains summary notes and photocopies of relevant documents at other institutions. Research was conducted by Natalie Lee on Clarence Hoblitzelle, his relationship with Mildred Bliss, and Charles Muskovitch. McDermott Intern Britnany Luberda created biographical information on Clarence and Karl and Ester Hoblitzelle, and the collection prior to Clarence's acquisition of it. There is also a subseries on other outside research that references Muskovitch or Hoblitzelle.
