General and miscellaneous, 1954 - 1962
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the records of the Early Texas Artists and Craftsmen Research and Acquisition Project, initiated by Director Jerry Bywaters in 1954. The bulk of the records are the correspondence between Bywaters and project researcher Pauline Pinckney. The project may have begun as the Folk Art Project and morphed into or was combined with the Early Texas Artists and Craftsmen project; the projects also may have conflated due to the work being done by a single researcher, Pinckney. There is also general information about the project, additional related correspondence, and research notes for Pinckney's book on artists of the Texas frontier, Painting in Texas: The Nineteenth Century, published by the Amon Carter Museum in 1967. The book has an introduction by Bywaters, and may or may not be related to the DMFA's Early Texas Artists and Craftsmen project.
