Scope and Contents
The Jewel Stern Twentieth-Century American Silver Research Collection consists of the collected research files and scholarly work of Jewel Stern, a noted collector and scholar of modern American silver. Research spans the 1920s-1980s; scholarly work is from the 1990s-2010s.
The collection is arranged in two series: Research Files and Personal.
The Research Files series consists of Stern's collected research over her 40-year investigation into modern American silver. Files mostly contain copies of articles and publications, but also may include images; Stern's notes, research correspondence, interview notes; artist CVs and statements; and other common "artist file" materials.
The Research Files series is further arranged in seven subseries: Designers, Studio Silversmiths, Sterling Silver Guild of America (SSGA), Institutions, Companies, Subjects / Topics, and Exhibitions. Most sub-series are arranged alphabetically, with exhibitions arranged chronologically. The SSGA subseries consists of files on the guild's annual exhibition and prize winners. The Subject/topic subseries contains general research on time periods, styles, techniques and materials. Note: there may be some cross-over among the seven subseries as the artists may be represented in multiple subseries.
The Personal Files series consists of Stern's work in promoting modern American silver for collection and further research. The materials in this series include correspondence, notes, exhibition records, and lecture scripts and images.
This series is further arranged in five subseries: Correspondence, Research Travel, Curatorial Projects, Gifts, and Lectures. The Correspondence and Gifts subseries are arranged alphabetically; Research Travel, Curatorial Projects and Lectures are arranged chronologically. Major areas covered in this series include Stern's curatorial work, research and writing for the DMA's Modernism in American Silver exhibition in 2006 and the Peter Muller-Monk exhibition with the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2015. Many of the lectures related to the Moderism in American SIlver exhibition tour.
