Mural creation and installation at Stewart Building, 1955, 1991-1994
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photographs, correspondence, publicity, and press materials relating to the history of the mural "Genesis" by Miguel Covarrubias and its initial installation at the Stewart Building in 1955 and later at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1993.
The mural was originally commissioned for the new building of the Stewart Company by Peter and Waldo Stewart and installed at the Stewart Building on January 14th, 1955, where it remained until the building's sale in the early 1990s. Materials relating to the Stewart Company and the mural's creation include correspondence, press materials, publicity, opening invitations, label text, and other documentation of the mural and its makers, including photographs of factory workers making mosaic tiles in the Mosaicos Italianos tile factory, located in Mexico, and photographs of the mural in situ at the Stewart Building.
Materials relating the the DMA reinstallation include correspondence between the DMA and Peter Stewart, acquisition meeting minutes, press and publicity materials, architectual drawings, and photographs taken of the mural after installation outside the Hamon Building.
