Biographical / Historical

Stephen Lapthisophon was born in Elkins, West Virginia in 1956, grew up in Houston, and currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas (2017). He received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979, and also studied Comparative Literature and Theory at Northwestern University from 1986-1989. He exhibited widely in the Chicago area with solo and group exhibitions; plays, performances and readings; publications; and as visiting artist and lecturer.

Lapthisophon first visited Dallas in 2002 for an artist residency at South Side on Lamar and would relocate to Dallas permanently in 2007. Lapthisophon was appointed senior lecturer in art and art history at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2008.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged generally alphabetically by subject, though there are no formal series in the arrangement. There are a few subjects that have multiple folders: curated exhibitions and exhibitions are arranged by date within the group; library and lecture/performance are arranged alphabetically by title; gallery ephemera is sorted by location, then alphabetically within location.

The curated exhibitions, exhibitions, and lecture/performance folders cover exhibitions or programs Lapthisophon was involved in and contain primarly gallery ephemera, though some contain reviews and other exhibition material.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Stephen Lapthiosphon. Lapthisophon delivered collection to the museum in 2015.
