Biographical / Historical
The Museum of the Americas was installed on the 4th floor of the new Hamon Building, which opened in September 1993. The Museum of the Americas included art from North, Central and South America covering ancient to modern time periods. The American art galleries contained paintings, sculpture and decorative arts featuring Texas artists, silver, Glass Study Room and Bybee Furniture collection; and the Ancient Americas or Pre-Columbian installation showcased the John and Nora Wise Collection of Ancient South American Art. Other galleries showed Spanish Colonial fine and decorative arts, Native American art, and Guatemalan textiles.
The Museum of the Americans was part of a concept of a "museum of museums" created by then director Richard R. Brettell. Other realized "museums" include the 1992 installations of the Museum of Europe and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
