Scope and Contents

The Pamela Nelson Papers contain documentation of the work and activities of Dallas-based artist Pamela Nelson. The collection contains photographs (slides and prints) of Nelson's art works/installations and parties; sketchbooks; appointment books; scrapbooks; art archive documenting projects and commissions; personal correspondence and letters; documentation of visits to the White House and her work with the George W. Bush Presidential Library; and her work with the Stew Pot and the US Commission on Fine Arts.

Papers and photographs related to Nelson's friendship with George and Laura Bush are restricted. Also restricted are personal correspondence until processed and reviewed.

Abstract

The collection contains documentation of the work and activities of Dallas-based artist Pamela Nelson. The collection contains photographs (slides and prints) of Nelson's art works/installations and parties; sketchbooks; appointment books; scrapbooks; art archive documenting projects and commissions; personal correspondence and letters; documentation of visits to the White House and her work with the George W. Bush Presidential Library; and her work with the US Commission on Fine Arts.

Arrangement

Papers have been arranged in 10 series: Photographs, Sketchbooks, Appointment books, scrapbooks, White House / Bush Library / Bush Family, Art Works, Art Archive, correspondence, US Commission on Fine Arts, and Reference material on art and artists. Appointment books are arranged chronologically and efforts have been made to keep like or similar things together within the Art Archive series.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Collection was retrieved from Nelson's studio/residence by Hillary Bober and Leigh Arnold 11 January 2013.

The collection was acquired by the DMA Archives as part of the DallasSITES (history of contemporary art in Dallas, 1963-present) research project (2011-2013).

Accruals

Accruals were received in 2015, 2016 and 2020.

Processing Information

Collection was arranged into series listed so it was organized and in containers that could be shelved.

Additional description/notes were added for DACS compliance and ArchivesSpace local usage guidelines in 2021.
