Arrangement
This collection is arranged in five series: Catalog Text and Images, Image Permissions, Project Correspondence, Research and Resources, and Catalog Development.
The Catalog Text and Images series is comprised of the materials that were to be published in the catalogue. Because the catalogue was never finalized, only the most recent draft of each essay was included, as well as the highest quality version of any associated images and captions. Along with each essay are orange papers with Ramona Austin's progress notes that were included in the binder the essays were originally transferred in. The catalogue was arranged with an introduction and other front matter followed by individual essays and short topics with associted images divided by region, with maps and regional information between some essays. Back matter includes an annotated object list with images. This arrangement was maintained in this series.
The Image Permissions series contains any sources for images included in essays or interstitial materials, correspondence with rights holders, and receipts of payment.
The Project Correspondence series compiles communications with essay contributors, editors, illustrators, art professionals, and other Dallas Museum of Art employees, all relating to the development of he African art catalogue.
The Research and Resources series contains a variety of materials related to essays and topics contributed by Ramona Austin and other general resources used in the development of the catalogue.
The Catalogue Development seriescontains notes and documentation of the development of the catalogue, including meeting notes and informal progress reports. Additonally, orange papers that were not able to be matched up to their corresponding essay or topic are included in this series.
Processing Information
The collection combines records transferred from the Curatorial and Publications departments, as well as a significant portion of Ramona Austin's Curatorial Records. Because records from different departments were combined, there was a significant amount of duplicated material, which was removed.
Titles of folders were preserved where possible.
