Biographical / Historical
Josephine Oliver Travis (1908-1991) was an artist, musician, and dancer from Paris, Texas. Her early interest in art was encouraged by Texas Artist Frank Reaugh (1860-1945) when her family moved into a property owned by him. Oliver Travis became Reaugh's protege and accompanied him on several group sketching trips into different parts of West Texas as part of the Frank Reaugh Art Club. She was also a violinist eventually studying in Paris in 1928 and playing the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Outside of music and drawing, Oliver Travis was a member of the "Young Americans" traveling troupe in the late 1920s, where she performed as "Miss Dallas" along with other young women representing different American cities.
During one of Reaugh's sketch trips, she met Dallas Nine artist Olin Travis, whom she would marry in 1935. She continued as a professional violinist, eventually retiring from music in the 1970s.

Arrangement
This collection is arranged in four series. The collection was received in generally the order it is arranged, with correspondence, publications, and photographs collected by subject or topic.
The Correspondence series contains handwritten and typed letters from Frank Reaugh dating from the 1920s and 30s and Olin Travis dating from the 1930s, as well as letters to and from members of her family and a small number related to her professional activities, such as participation in the Ypung Americans group and musical performances.
The Photographs series contans iamges of Josephine Oliver Travis, primarily from young adulthood and into her professional career. There are a number of photographs of her participation in the Ypung Americans group, including photographs of other particpatns in the group. Also included in the series are photographs of Frank Reaugh and possible members of the Oliver family. Most photographs are unlabeled and undated, but seem likely to be from the 1920s.
The Publicity and Printed Materials series contains newspaper clippings, brochures, small publications, and bound volumes related to her career and her friendship with Frank Reaugh. A significant portion of the clippings reference the Young Americans and Opportunity Girls groups that Josephine Oliver Travis was a member of. Others mention her musical performances. Most of the publications and books relate to Frank Reaugh, his life, and his art.
The Biographical Materials series consists of vita records, drawings, and ephmera from her childhood into her adul life, includin her marriage certificate to Dallas Nine artist Olin Travis, costume samples from her career, and documentation of her participation in the Frank Reaugh Art Club.

Processing Information
This collection was received by the Archives with some order, including a scrapbook with photographs and clippings, a binder of collected and organized correspondence, bound volumes, and photographs grouped and bagged together. While it is unclear if this order was imposed by the creator, her estate, or another person, order has been maintained where possible. Correspondence, clippings, and other dated material have been arranged chronologically where possible to facilitate ease of use. Where no dates are present, the order has been maintained.
To ensure the long-term preservation of materials in this collection, pages of the scrapbook with materials attached or adhered were removed from the scrapbook and rehoused in a flat box. The cover and blank pages were removed from the collection during processing.
