Biographical / Historical

Juanita Kramer "Cookie" Bromberg, born in 1902, was a long-time patron of the arts in Dallas. She and her husband Alfred L. Bromberg were print collectors and instrumental in forming the Dallas Print and Drawing Society in the 1930s. The Brombergs donated over 200 prints purchased in Europe and Japan with the museum's permanent collection in mind, celebrated in a 1982 exhibition, with addition prints donated in 2000 following her death in 1999.

Mrs. Bromberg was also a founding trustee and Vice President of the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts spurred by Dallas' "communist controversy" in 1957-1958 and her stalwart opposition to political control over the kind of art that should be shown in public museums. After the merger of the DMCA with the Dallas Museum of Art in 1963, she was a trustee and President of the Foundation for the Arts from 1963-1980 and long-term trustee of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts / Dallas Museum of Art.

She was described as "a lady of great taste, intelligence and style. She is remembered by all her family and friends as a vivacious hostess, with a keen eye for the best in the arts and the social world." (Dallas Morning News obituary, September 5, 1999).
