Scope and Contents
The collection consists of the original log book for library accessions beginning with the first major book purchase for the library collection in 1941. Log is handwritten and recorded by date and accession number (nos. 1-6400). Entries in the log date between 31 December 1941 and 1 February 1969.

Biographical / Historical
The library was established in 1936 with funds remaining from the construction of the new museum building in Fair Park. It was initially comprised of a small group of books used by staff. In 1941, with a wish list and $5000, new books were purchased by a committee led by the museum director, Richard Foster Howard. On March 12, 1944, the library opened to the public, with books, color reproductions, art annuals and periodicals.
In 1965, Fred Mitcham was hired as the library’s first professional librarian. Charged with establishing the library as an important art research library, Mr. Mitcham developed the library’s collection by expanding the serial collection and buying essential catalogues raisonnés, a requirement for serious scholarship. With the expanding collection, staff and outside research use greatly increased.
